2.
What is the procedure in making the first contact?
Typically
the mentor is will initiate the first contact by emailing the student,
and together you may both set up a preferable time to contact by phone.
Emailing is also an option to converse. If the mentor has not contacted
you yet, you may email them and introduce yourself. See Letters
to the Mentor.

3.
How often do you contact your mentor?
During
the HDA conference it was mentioned about 1-2 times a month if talking
by phone. This is all up to your relationship with your mentor. Feel
free to ask them which is most convenient for them. Sometimes communicating
though email may be more convenient and thus you may do this more often
then via phone.
