NOTE: The original incentive for preparing this list of Web sites was provided by my work on the future of social science in a global context. However, subsequently, work with an interdisciplinary group of social scientists at the University of Hawaii led me to think that a more ambitious list would serve a useful purpose. Our group started with some analysis of the basic critique of the established disciplines offered by the Gulbenkian Commission, chaired by Emanuel Wallerstein. The results are organized schematically on the basis of the outline posted above, and the Site Map -- just click on any item.

My starting point involved writing links for the home pages of international professional associations in the social sciences, followed by other institutions, international and domestic. As the list grew, I saw the need for better bibliographic information and statistical data available through the INTERNET and in libraries. Then I took up substantive themes related to my own research: globalization and glocalization, ethnicity and nationalism, constitutionalism and democracy, political science and public administration. Finally, I thought we needed information about some fundamental matters: the segment on terminology reflects my belief that we need to improve our ability to identify new concepts and find unambiguous ways to represent them. Moreover, to pay for research we need money, leading to a segment on foundations and other sources of support for research. For more detail, view the SITE MAP. If you want to search my home page, please check out FreeFind or go to the Atomz search engine for more detailed answers.

This site is subdivided into four major sub-sites for people || information || themes || fundamentals. These sub-sites are partitioned into segments each of which is subdivided by topics -- they are listed in the Map , which also includes an alphabetical index. AtomZ will help one find answers to specific questions about this Site. TOP returns one to the top of this page,

For external connections, segments of this list are linked to related segments of my Home Page by an asterisked HOME*. Without a star, HOME returns one to the top of my Home Page. To search the INTERNET, click on SEARCH which opens an extended list of engines and also offers information and help for creating and using Web Sites.

ORGANIZATIONS

Click on a group's acronym to open its Home Page where one can find information about its goals, organization, activities, and publications. Some sites have useful lists of related sites -- they are linked in a sub-line.

ETHNIC-L: Some of these sites belong to members of ETHNIC_L. They are identified by stars (*) that support a jump to their entries in the ETHNIIC-L ORGANIZATIONS list. These entries provide a short statement about the group's activities, mailto links for its contact persons, and supplementary links for resources, bibliography, syllabi, terminology, etc. This list also facilitates comparisons between groups. HOME PAGE DOCUMENTS takes one to links for some activities and texts relating to ethnicity, nationalism, and migration.

CONTACT PERSONS persons identified in the ETHNIC-L entries belong to a listserv that supports the sharing of information among members about their research, conferences, publications, etc. A planned Terminology Page will facilitate improved communication among specialists on ethnicity. Members are entitled to re-distribute data to their own members, thereby facilitating cooperation and coordination of effort between scholars working in different organizational contexts. The listserv does not duplicate information found on each group's Home Page -- rather, it enables members to inform each other about new information posted on these pages.

Willa Tanabe, Dean of the School of Hawaiian, Asian and Pacific Studies at the University of Hawaii has written:

... we have to understand the uniqueness of cultural areas, but the processes making the impact are global in nature: e.g. diaspora-movements of people be they workers, tourists, or students; new technologies such as the Internet; environmental workings such as the hot house effect or pollution of the ocean; or health issues such as AIDS. All of these processes or forces are global in nature. ...we have failed to account for what is global in local environments."

Much of the material indexed below presupposes the boundedness of local areas, but here and there we are also shown that every locality is global -- that glocalization is a reality. Most localities are regional, as reported below, but some are truly global, so widely scattered they defy areal nomenclature. The Rotuma Forum shows how people living on or outside a small Pacific island stay in touch on many levels through the INTERNET.

Glocalities may be compared to comets: they have a local head and a widely dispersed tail and it is both unrealistic and unnecessary to try to separate the two parts of this whole. However, neither our vocabulary nor conventional thinking permit us to think globally about the interconnectedness of people living in a home territory and their members living elsewhere. Diaspora is a term used rather imprecisely to refer to people who have left home or, more usefully, to dispersed peoples who stay in touch with their homeland. Some of them have Home Pages which may be found in alphabetical order at: Diasporas. The same sites are classed by regions, with areal links, below. See also Diasporan concepts.

However, a diaspora needs to be understood in the context of its homeland and its anaspora -- i.e., all its residents not in diaspora. Diasporans and anasporans are complementary parts of a whole nation, state, or glocality. Area specialists tend to focus on anasporans with little reference to their diasporan partners -- like studying wives and husbands separately, without any reference to families. To help readers close this gap, links for some diasporan sites are included in the sectors for each world region into which this Glocalization segment has been subdivided. The head/tail order seen in comets is inverted, putting diaspora sites before their anasporas.

THEO-LOGICAL PERSPECTIVES

Alphabetically arranged sites interspersed with categorial segments as follows:
Buddhist Catholic Comparative Religion Freedom
of Relig.
Hindu Inter-Faith Islamic Judaic Orthodox Pantheist Paranormal Protestant Sikh

ECO-LOGICAL frameworks link humans with their natural environment and GeoLogic links them with the Earth, but THEO-LOGIC expands this context to include super-natural or spiritual forces. Traditional religions offer doctrines designed to support these linkages. Feng Shui, an ancient Chinese geomantic practice and belief system, provides an Eastern model that has provoked global interest as one may see by going to the Feng Shui Society's Home page. The Church of All Worlds (pagan) offers a journal, Green Egg that is dedicated to ... the shared values of globalism, ecological sustainability, and planetary stewardship...[of] the Earth we hold sacred.

A comprehensive list of Religious Movements -- prepared by Jeffrey K. Hadden and his students at the Department of Sociology, University of Virginia -- includes systematic information about each community, followed by a wealth of Web sites. This is the ideal place to get an overview of the world's faith-based communities.

See also:

The list of home sites that follows is intended, selectively, to illustrate how these communities have responded to the challenges of globalization. Most of them have seized the opportunities offered by the Internet not only to support the THEO-LOGIC of their own beliefs, but also to try to make the world -- and the earth -- a better place for all humans. No matter how ancient or contemporary their roots -- from Zoroastrians to Baha'i' to Christian Scientists -- in the modern world they co-inhabit cyberspace. For example, a tract on the Good Religion and Zoroastrianism reads: The restoration of the religion to its pristine position provides prudent answers to a ... world perplexed by the primeval past, the practical present, and the promising future... the Zarathushtrian religion is [ultra-modern] in its eternal guideline for a good life on this good earth and beyond. Data from this files provide the basis for a comparative analysis of globalization and religion to be presented at a panel of the International Studies Association, 23-27 March 2002.

Faith-based communities include a wide range of esoteric and individualistic movements, atheists, humanists, and pagans as well as the mono-theists who follow the more familiar and well institutionalized religious persuasions. Among them the most complex, centralized, and globally linked on the Internet is headquartered in the Vatican. The political links between church and state are illuminated, statistically , in Adherents.com . The entries are alphabetized but some major categories with headings in caps are followed by the relevant sub-lists. Readers are invited to suggest links to relevant sites they think we should add to this list. Write to Fred Riggs

Note: Most glossaries contain only alphabetical lists of terms, although a few include some hierarchic information that facilitates conceptual analysis. The distinction between conceptual and terminological analysis can be illustrated by the treatment of homonyms and heteronyms in a variety of Web Sites linked at: Homonymy. A contrasting explanation of how this matter could be treated conceptually is offered in the text preceding these links. A useful compendium of links to Web sites illustrating sociological usages in various contexts can be found at SocioCite University of Amsterdam. For their index of sociological subject areas see Index. These sites provide encyclopedic information, not just definitions. For an extensive list of dictionaries, glossaries, thesauri and encyclopedias go to Encyberpedia.

By contrast, most specialized glossaries highlight a semantic alphabetized [terms to concepts] paradigm. The two approaches are complementary, both are needed, and they may be linked in a single text.)
