Report by Volker Dreier on the COCTA-ISA sessions
at the 14th ISA World Congress in Montreal, July/August
1998
At the 14th World Congress of Sociology in Montreal, the
Research Committee on Conceptual and Terminological Analysis (COCTA)
carried out 10 sessions referring to topics like "The Concept of Action",
"Social Science in the World Wide Web" and "A Roundtable on Concepts of
Globalization". The roundtable on Globalization was a great success for
COCTA. More than 40 people attended and confirmed the need for a
clarification of the concepts needed to describe and analyze the changing
social world at the end of the 20th century, from a
sociological point of view. Our thanks go to Fred Riggs, who organized
this session and demonstrated, that new concepts for describing and
explaining our present socio-economic and socio-political reality need
first of all clarification and appropriated operationalization. [For more
details see "Concepts of Globalization"
According to the objectives of COCTA, all sessions were based on clarification of the metaterms as well as substantive sociological terms. An average of 20 persons joined the sessions, an indicator of the continuing need for conceptual and terminological analysis in sociological reconstructions of social life in a rapidly changing world society. COCTA-ISA thanks the outgoing President, George Graham, for leading the research committee for four years in an enriched fashion.
New elections of the officers of COCTA-ISA were held in
Montreal which resulted as follows: President: Henry Teune (USA),
secretary: Volker Dreier (Germany/Italy); board: Matti Malkia, (Finland),
Volker H. Schmidt (Germany), Fred Riggs (USA), Hartmut Rosa (Germany), and
Peter Ohly (Germany).
For the next world congress in Australia,
panels were proposed on themes like: "Myths", "Creativity" and "Conceptual
History".
