The list of subscribers that follows was originally compiled to support cross-disciplinary communication within the social sciences at the University of Hawaii. We used the name Gulbenkian Report Discourse (GRD-L) because we took our inspiration from by the report of Emanuel Wallerstein and others pointing to the essential parochialism of our disciplinary categories as products of 20th century Western hubris. At the dawn of the 21st century, in the wake of accelerating globalization, we need a deeper understanding of ourselves and our problems in Hawaii based on a "town/gown" discourse in which academics and community members share their thoughts and experiences. Accordingly, we plan to expand our membership ander a new name, GLOCAL-L , adopted as a short form for Global/Local Discourse to represent the embeddedness of Hawaii as an island community in the evolving world system. We do not plan any meetings in the name of this list, but subscribers are involved in a congeries of different groups that do hold meetings, and they are invited to share experiences and disclose Web Sites containing relevant information.
