1. HISTORY

Rosita P. Chang and S. Ghon Rhee (K.J. Luke Chair of International Finance and Banking) founded and co-directed the Pacific-Basin Capital Markets (PACAP) Research Center at the University of Rhode Island (URI) in 1988 with the purpose of implementing four major programs: (i) PACAP Databases program; (ii) PACAP Finance Conference Program; (iii) Pacific-Basin Finance Journal; and (iv) PACAP Financial Executive Program. Over the past 10-year period, the PACAP Research Center established itself as the premier research institute with its unique capital market programs serving academia, governments, and securities industry in the Asia-Pacific region.  With both professors joining the University of Hawaii (UH) faculty, the Asia-Pacific Financial Markets (FIMA) Research Center was established to: (i) assume responsibility for some selected PACAP Research Center’s programs to be transferred to UH; and (ii) create new programs consistent with the UH research thrust and its outreach activities.

2.  PROGRAMS IN THE FIMA RESEARCH CENTER

bullet

K. J. Luke Annual Symposium Program on Asia-Pacific Financial Markets which is designed to narrow the gap between academic research and capital market policy formulation by integrating the academic and practitioner viewpoints on various policy issues relevant to financial market regulation and operation of stock/futures exchanges in the region.

bullet

K. J. Luke Financial Executive Program which is intended for market regulators and financial executives to develop a better understanding of the financial markets in the region as well as in the developed economies in light of state-of-the-art finance theories

bullet

Pacific-Basin Finance Journal which publishes the highest quality theoretical and empirical research on financial markets of the region.

In addition to the three programs above, the FIMA Research Center will be involved with the PACAP/FMA Finance Conference Program in providing an international forum for global communities of business, government, and academia to disseminate research findings relevant to the Asia-Pacific financial markets. This Conference also serves as an annual meeting of the Pacific-Basin Financial Management Society, an academic association created in August 1997 in Shanghai, China. The FIMA Research Center will continue its participation in the conference program by organizing special sessions for non-academic participants and by administering the Competitive Research Award Program.

3.  JOINT VENTURE

The FIMA Research Center created a joint venture with URI to manage the PACAP Databases Program which creates, maintains, and distributes capital market databases of 10 countries in the region including: China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand. Under this joint venture, UH assumes a leadership role as the front office by acting as a liaison with participating financial institutions from the region and by marketing and distributing the databases. URI, in turn, provides the back office function of maintaining and updating the databases.

4.  ORGANIZATION OF THE FIMA RESEARCH CENTER
