The Atherton YMCA has a mission to develop a family of confident, balanced individuals, who possess quality leadership skills, respect themselves and others, are locally and globally conscious, and uphold Christian Values.
There are very Few "Student YMCA's" left in the world. Hawaii is fortunate to have ATHERTON YMCA near the campus of the University of Hawaii.
Its members are made up of university students and other young adults. As with all YMCA's, it has a Board of Managers. They are caring people who have a mission to continue the worthwhile services of this "Student YMCA" and it's programs.
"A" House, the pink building, ATHERTON YMCA, whatever you call it, ATHERTON YMCA has been around since 1932. It has been housing students from around the world, and its programs have reached Hawaii's community in so many ways. The residence program, for instance, features monthly culture sharing events, right in the lobby! The ATHERTON YMCA is also has a peaceful, mature, spacious and studious living environment. Drop us a line for more information about the ATHERTON YMCA!
A very special program that has been a part of ATHERTON YMCA for many years is called "Aikane". It brings mentally challenged teens and YMCA members together for monthly field trips. The happiness that comes from their time together cannot be forgotten.
The Fellowship groups at ATHERTON YMCA participate in a number of community service projects each year. They have come together in beach clean-ups, handing out organ donor cards at UH football games, and much more. The feel that the ATHERTON YMCA is a good and healthy place for them to gather and interact.
In cooperation with the Moiliili Senior Center, ATHERTON YMCA members provide monthly outings for its elderly participants. One-on-one friendships are often developed between the young adults and senior citizens. you can just feel the warmth and love that generates between these two generations.
Probably the best known program at ATHERTON YMCA is Frosh Camp. It has been ongoing since 1938 and has serviced over 15,000 young adults. Each August found "campers" meeting new friends, getting accustomed to "college life", and learning about themselves. Many friendships at camp continue today!
The YMCA runs two types of International programs, one is the dormitory and residence and includes culture sharing and fellowship. There are currently two international clubs, one for Samoans and another that is “mixed plate”. The second program is for those traveling to Japan on our every other year trip. The first year is fundraising, the second preparing in a more complete way.
This program teaches students to facilitate small groups. They use those skills to conduct workshops and camps for the YMCA and local high schools. It is truly a leadership program, teaching our young adults the skills they need to lead us in the near future.
The sound of music, the smiling faces, the energy...this is Showtime Express. They represent ATHERTON YMCA with their singing at special programs, at high schools, at Frosh Camp, etc. and always gives pride to this organization which services the young adults in Hawaii. You will be proud to know that our future is in their hands.
