Introduction

Kapi’olani Community College offers an Associate in Science Degree (A.S.) and Certificate of Achievement in Exercise and Sport Science (ESS). The curriculum has been designed to prepare students for careers and employment as fitness instructors, personal trainers, and conditioning specialists. The curriculum was designed by faculty who have professional experience in these fields with support from an ESS Advisory Board. The ESS Advisory Board is made up of fitness and conditioning professionals from the community.

The coursework within the curriculum provides both the theory and skills needed to be successful in this profession. The theoretical background builds the foundation for the student to understand the scientific and behavioral principles behind exercise program design and lifestyle management. Students will take courses that challenge them to design exercise and conditioning programs for a wide variety of clients. Emphasis is placed on skills such as their ability to teach specific exercises or communicate appropriate information to clients. Students will eventually participate in a practicum experience where they can apply their knowledge and skills under the guidance of a practicum site mentor. The curriculum has also been designed to support students in obtaining various certifications in the fitness industry.
