FAQ's

Why do I need a degree to be a personal trainer or fitness specialist?
The International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) currently recommends that member clubs hire personal trainers who hold at least one current certification from a certifying organization. However, IHRSA also recognizes that education may be an appropriate substitute for certification.

Coursework in the areas of anatomy, physiology, exercise program design, kinesiology, nutrition, resistance training, special populations, and business principles will not only support studying for a specific certification, but may go beyond the minimal competencies needed to pass certain certifications.

What is a national certification? How do I become certified?
A national certification may be obtained by passing a national, standardized examination. Depending on your educational background and experience, you may be eligible to take several different certification exams. Many employers expect fitness professionals to have earned at least one certification from a nationally recognized fitness association. IHRSA recommends that a certifying organization be accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting body, such as the National Organization for Competency Assurance (NOCA).

What are the employment opportunities in this field?
Personal Trainers and conditioning specialists may find employment in fitness centers, health clubs, resorts, military-based fitness programs, corporate fitness centers, and community recreational programs. Many personal trainers are self-employed and have created their own personal training facility or business.
