Fixing your MBR
The MBR is what I believe to be a file embedded into your hard
drive's startup process. If you'ev ever run Linux(OS) then you should
know what LILO is. If not there is nothing to worry about. The MBR
on your hard drive can sometimes be corrupted due to abnormal termination
of Windows98 or for other reasons. The MBR is used to boot up many
things... if it is corrupted your system will "hang" and
stop responding.
To fix this problem you will need:
DOS, Windows98, or Windows95 System Startup Disk
If you are viewing this page then I can assume that your computer has no problems... however it is always a good idea to have a Startup Disk around.
To create a Startup Disk:
From Windows95 or Windows98
Open [My Computer]
Place Disk into Drive A: or B:
Right Click [31/2 Floppy Disk]
Drag down to and click on [Format...]
Under Format type select option [Copy System Files only]
Then click [OK]
It will begin formatting... and then you will have a Startup Disk. Now that you have your Startup Disk... I will simulate the operation of fixing your MBR.If your computer starts up but freezes several times, Windows doesn't boot up at all...
Place disk into Disk Drive.
Reboot computer.
Allow Operating System to Boot up.
If rebooted correctly you will see something like:
Microhard(R) Windoze 93
(C)Copyleft Microhard Corp 1981-1998.
A:\>
Now type the command: "c:\windows\command\FDISK.exe /MBR"
Remove disk.
Reboot computer.
You have now fixed your MBR. Now remove the disk from the drive and reboot your computer. Your hard drive should boot up correctly now... unless the MBR wasn't the problem.
