Young Peoples Congress: In October of 1999, Hawaii will be host to an event
called the Millennium Young Peoples Congress. A thousand youth delegates from around
the world, representing over 200 countries, will come to the Crossroads of the
Pacific to discuss pressing global issues such as environmental degredation, human
rights, and poverty. The delegates, ranging in age from about 14 to 20 years old, will
arrive on the 21st of October and stay for ten days until the 30th. They will be housed
primarily in homestays provided by volunteer host families on the island of Oahu. The Portable Peace Camp Project: Of the thousand teenagers who will be coming to Hawaii, approximately 30 will be chosen to stay in a separate campsite provided by a group of architecture students at the University of Hawaii School of Architecture. The project, named the Portable Peace Camp Project, happens in three phases: (1) design of the structures, (2) construction (prefabrication) of the structures, and (3) erection at the site. |
