Introduction to Business Current Event Presentation

Each student will write a 1-2 page review/critique of an article pertaining to a marketing issue that presently is being discussed in class (see schedule). Students will present their Executive Summaries to the class on an assigned day.

A. Oral Presentation Guidelines

  1. You will have less than five minutes to summarize your article.
  2. Please practice at least one time before the actual presentation.
  3. If an appropriate visual aide is available, please present it.
  4. Try to generate some discussion about the topic.  You will receive questions from the audience. Please feel free to ask the audience questions too.

B. Written Report Guidelines

1. Please write in formal English

Do not write in the first person (e.g., I or we).

Weak: "Below, we have outlined a number of proposals that you should consider."

Better: "Below, several outlined proposals should be considered."

Never use contractions (e.g., can't )

Weak: "A push strategy won't be effective in this case."

Better: "A push strategy will be ineffective in this case."

Do not leave the reader in suspense.

Weak: "This is not close to the amount of resources needed to accomplish the task."

Better: "This budget is inadequate to accomplish the task."

Too many words

Weak: "The reason for this joint promotion would be to provide another resource to push the product further and to establish a relationship within the pet industry."

Better: "Joint promotion pushes the product further and establishs a relationship within the pet industry."

2. Remember, you are writing a professional business paper. Apply what you have learned, do not copy materials from other sources and take credit for them. It is important for me to see how you apply the concepts and theories. Impress the reader by demonstrating a competence of the theories that we have reviewed for this course.

3. Use double spacing.

4. The report should be stapled together.  Weight and space limitations dictate economizing.  Please do not put your report in a folder.

5. Written Summary Format (see below) – see Current Event Example
