"She
was my roommate in the dorm at college. One time we dragged home a toilet
that was abandoned outside of a sorority house, signed it R. Mutt and
proudly placed it in the middle of our piles of dirty clothes, unfinished
art, and musical instruments.
Now she calls me from the road. He breaks into the house leaving the
toilet unflushed just to show that he can. The children have been shuttled
from relatives to friends, crossing state borders.. Virginia, Ohio,
Pennsylvania, as she tries to monitor the little ones diabetes from
the road, tries to keep her job, tries to keep the lawyers moving. His
girlfriend called her once, an ally only when blood stained the walls.
I see her in my dreams at night. I am searching through dark caves for
her, dreaming a protector for her who will come riding in like Duchamp
on a shiny white steed."
