Research Interests and Activities

I am facinated by the evolution of species and populations and the importance of behavior in contributing to the local adaptation of populations and maintenance and formation of species.  The Hawai`i Islands are a fascinating location to investigate these processes because of the many endemic species and the highly variable environments.  I have mostly worked with animals with wings - birds and insects.  Currently, my students and I work with Hawaiian Drosophila, a highly species rich group, and the Nene, Hawaiian goose, that is an endangered species. To see more about my research interests, publications and grants to support these activities please follow the Research link above.

Programs and Teaching

I have also been involved in developing a number of undergraduate and graduate programs at the University of Hawaii.  Please follow the Program link above to find the Biology Department and the EECB curriculum that I helped develop.  The TCBES graduate program was started in 2004 and I have been the chair of the program since its inception.
