This section covers that period traditionally termed Unified Silla (to differentiate it from the Silla kingdom before it had overcome Paekche and Koguryô to unify the peninsula), as well as the later Three Kingdoms period (hu samguk sidae) - all total the 268 years from 668 to 936. The Later Three Kingdoms refers to that period of increasing upheaval and decentralization that characterized the last decade of the 9th century and the 10th century up to the surrender of the abdication of the final Silla king to the leader of Later Koguryô (now called Koryô, 935) and the defeat of Later Paekche and the reunification of the peninsula under the Koryô dynasty (936). Unified Silla has enjoyed a relatively wide popularity among Western scholars, of particular interest has been the study of the Buddhism of the period, a time when a much more serious and sophisticated examination of its doctrine was taken up by such preeminent religious figures as the monks Wônhyo (617-686) and Ûisang (625-702). The art of Unified Silla has also been a popular topic in Western scholarly circles. This same interest cannot be seen regarding the Later Three Kingdoms, a period which, despite its brevity, is replete with dynamic social forces worthy of more in-depth study.
