I Thought
Sam Tran

I thought you'd like to know that
when you smiled at me from a distance,
my heart went wild.

I thought you'd like to know that
when you kissed me,
my heart stopped.

I thought you'd like to know that
when you undressed yourself,
my heart goes racing like a race car.

I thought you'd like to know that
when you touched me,
I felt blood rushing through my body.

I thought you'd like to know that
when you were near,
I felt warm, compassionate love.

I thought you'd like to know that
when you were away,
I felt miserable.

I thought you'd like to know that
when you whispered "love" into my ear,
I was happy.

I thought you'd like to know that
when you danced before me,
I was energized with excitement by your beauty.

I thought you'd like to know that
when you were with other guys,
I was jealous.

All these came down to a
simple thought and that is...

I thought you'd like to know that
I loved you.

But I was wrong!
I must have been a fool to be thinking this way.

YOU came and loved me.
YOU stayed and hurt me.
YOU left...and...freed me.

Memories
Dad,

I walked through

wet alleys

in my good sneakers,

Kicking a

rusty tin can;

thinking about

your angular face

and the way...

your eyes used to shine

and the way...

you held me between your arms

and the way...

you would sing me lullaby at sun down

I knocked the can hard...

very, very hard

like two cars went heads on

It clanked against

a grey brick wall;

dropped into a puddle of mud

and slowly dissolved...

as though quicksand pulling beneath it

like my precious memories

of thy father.
