What are symphylids?

Symphylids are small white arthropods which move through soil pores and feed on root hairs and small roots. Adults can reach 5 mm in length and have 12 legs and 2 antennae. The life cycle can take 3 months to complete, but adults can live longer. The extent of their damage is currently been researched, but may cause direct damage when present in large numbers. Secondary infections from fungi can compound symphylid damage.

How can I spot them?

Agitate a plant in a bucket of water, which allows the symphlids to float to the surface.

Where are symphylids found in Hawaii?

There is a low rate of incidence on Oahu in Pineapple. Symphylids are more common in pineapple grown on Maui.

How can I control them?

Bayer suggests specific control are not necessary as damage is unpredictable, but recommends Temik 10G and Mocap 10G if needed.
