star wars and campbell (~old school)

As much as possible, try to perform old-school analysis by utilizing strong evidence incorporation (from your text); additionally play with new-school analysis by potentially conducting external research (especially including personal opinion)

In Henderson's Star Wars: The Magic of Myth, there are several sections dedicated to Campbell's theories on the monomyth, and there are also sections on the external influences that may have motivated George Lucas to conceive of his design and scope of the films. In this assignment, you will use your text (and film) to discuss in greater detail Campbellian theories that are applicable to the gamut of The Star Wars mythos.

Task:

1. Skim the entire first section, pages 1-120. Read two sections of Henderson's Star Wars: The Magic of Myth, specifically in the sections of Star Wars and Classic Mythology: The Hero's Journey and the Conflict of Good Versus Evil.

2. Figure out which sections appeal to you in the entire Hero's Journey cycle.

3. Search down and watch the relevant clip that pertains to the section in the Hero's Journey, and carefully take notes about what the scene looks like.

4. Do your best to imagine how the film's design, from all angles (setting/character/tensions/symbols/theme) and other old school devices are potent in the scene; in other words, do your best to carefully explain how the scene shows that fundamental aspect of the Hero's Journey.

If you need help procuring a copy of the movie, ask me. I have the VHS and DVD versions that you can utilize.
