Heroic Presentation and Writeup:

Overview:

You can generally tell a lot about a person when they reveal to you, often on their Myspace page, who their heroes are. This is a simple "get to know you exercise" that is a low-stakes verbal and written assignment.

Your task is to work together in a comfortable spirit of ohana and being supportive of everyone early in the semester. Your verbal component should be about 5 minutes (more if you will have some pictures or other audiovisual elements to share), and your writeup should be about 1-2 pages.

Your presentation and writeup to a small group is about a favorite fictional hero or heroine, not a real life hero and heroine, because that is the main unit for your first major essay.

Here are the Student-Learning Outcomes:

--Select a favorite fictionl hero or heroine from any time period. The hero or heroine could be a classic, epic hero like Beowulf, or a modern hero from a manga or anime—it simply doesn't matter. You should be sure, however, that you genuinely like that character, that that character is truly your favorite.

--Research, thoroughly, the general origins and interesting factoids about your hero, via online sites or other research methods. Wikipedia might be your first option, but I hope and pray that it is certainly not your ONLY option.

--Prepare a verbal and written component for your fictional hero presentation.

--Work and listen cordially to your classmates and work together in the spirit of ohana.

Here are some general assessments that you might consider for your presentation:

1. What are the general origins of this hero? What made them become heroic?

2. Does that hero have superpowers? What are the significance of those particular powers?

3. How would you, at least initially, characterize the mood or vibe of that hero? (for example, are they a dark hero like Batman or an all-American hero like Captain America?)

4. When did you start to like this hero? Is this a childhood hero like Kikaida? Does the timing of that affection for this hero make a difference?

5. What makes you inherently feel that this is your favorite hero?

6. For fun:: If you were a superhero, what kind of hero would you like to be, and what kind of superpowers would you like to have?

(I prefer that you write in an essay-based format rather than just list your answers to these questions. As such, try to employ transitions and paragraphs.)
