Aloha Writers' Kiosk

Managing AWKward writing since 2014.

Since 2015, AWK has now been folded into general service with the Study Hub. Please proceed to the Study Hub website.

If your writing often seems like a cactus—prickly, full of potential thorns and other awkward dimensions, The Aloha Writers' Kiosk can help you with that.

Our Aloha Writers’ Kiosk space can be found in the Lama Library, on the first floor across from the Circulation Counter, for writing mentoring, free handouts, and other support materials.

Additional tutoring/mentoring support can be found at the Kahikoluamea Center above Subway; AWK faculty volunteers are welcome to provide tutoring support alongside the tutoring staff and volunteers that are already in place in the Kahikoluamea Center. Priority will be given to ENG 22 students in this particular space but all students are always welcome.

Students: Come check us out! Bring your ideas for papers, writing questions, and your positive energy!

Faculty: We hope that you'll support this project by recommending your students, volunteering your time, or maybe even both! Thank you to the many people that have already supported this project with your valuable feedback, time and energy.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact any of us.

Our Work

The Aloha Writers' Kiosk (AWK) aims to provide valuable face-to-face tutoring/mentoring resources on campus and to guide students to available writing supports (books, websites, handouts, tutoring, teachers, etc). AWK will allow faculty to interact with students in ways beyond their classrooms. Volunteering your time at AWK will also be an opportunity to provide service to the College, more importantly to students. Engaging in different levels of student support encourages positive student experiences on campus as well as a greater faculty understanding of the strengths and needs of students from varying writing levels.

Who We Are

Faculty who wanted to continue the model of HCC's Open Office Hours initiative run by their retention specialist as well as the grassroots models already begun on campus at multiple sites.

What We Do

The kiosk will support writing for all levels (ENG 22, ENG 100, ESL 100 and W.I. courses) as well as provide take away handouts for further student assistance. We envision tutoring sessions happening one-on-one, and if space allows for small groups.

About Us

Faculty: Please don't forget to send your students to any of the Aloha Writers' Kiosk locations once the first writing assignment begins. If you are interested in volunteering, please visit our Faculty Scheduler to plug in your availability or e-mail Porscha (delafuen@hawaii.edu). If the Scheduler does not have a day and time that is convenient for you, there is a separate page (Sheet 3) for you to sign up. Feel free to volunteer some of your office hours to this project, but be sure to keep enough time for the students enrolled in your own classes.
We hope that you'll support this project by recommending your students, volunteering your time, or maybe even both! Thank you to the many people that have already supported this project with your valuable feedback, time and energy.
