art as power

Overview: The worlds and words of mythology and art are intertwined; one comments on the other, and vice-versa. In this short assignment, you will be undertaking a visual analysis of elements, with a primary goal in mind: to identify power-relationships between characters in a piece of art.

In Greek mythology, which was largely patriarchal and male-dominated, gender relationships have a tendency to skew power into the hands of the gods, not the goddesses. Your task is to look at two paintings and to figure out, even if there is no right answer, who the most powerful person in the painting is.

Task:

Take a look at both paintings. Do a separate writeup on each, with each writing prompt as the following: Who do you think is the most powerful person or persons in the painting?

For extra-credit, find a painting of two or more gods and goddesses from any culture and answer the same question: Who is the most powerful person or persons in the painting and what makes them powerful...

Painting One: "Las Meninas" by Velasquez

Painting Two: La Primavera by Botticelli
