Style Sheet / Comment Guide for all Papers in the Course

(or in most classes)

In general...

Every paper requires a general format, according to M.L.A. or A.P.A.-based conventions (THE RULES).

The rules were ultimately designed to ensure that papers were neat and orderly. All of these rules are established and found on the OWL Research site at Purdue University, and the respective copyrights, if any, are associated with their Style Sheet Website.

Here is a link to the website; the website contains the OFFICIAL RULES ABOUT: MLA FORMATTING and STYLE.

Here are the basic rules that I expect for my class (mainly the stuff I care about):
1. Keep your paper neat. I've seen dirt, coffee stains, gum, hanabata, and in strange cases, teeth marks on student papers in the past.
2. I'm okay with .8, .9, or 1 inch margins, although the rest of the universe insists on 1-inch margins. Consequently, please adhere to 1 inch margins.
3. Try to stick to a 12 point font, because my eyes are going bad. I've had students usea really large font just so that their paper appeared to be around 4 - 5 pages.
4. Center your title.
5. Before and after your title, there should be two spaces. In effect, hit return before and after your title to space it away from the first sentence.
6. Your entire work should be double-spaced. I can't provide you with effective written feedback UNLESS it is double-spaced.

7. Your heading in my class will usually look like this:

(left or right margin...your choice)

(single-spacing)

(name)

(Mr. Kubota) (not Professor, not Dave, not Sensei)

(course alpha--Eng + #) (either English 100 or English 257 G)
