RESEARCH TOPICS AND DEADLINES

The research project constitutes 40% of your grade (10% for thesis and list of references and 30% for the final paper)
All research projects must be developed in consultation with me.  Please sign up for office hours to talk about your project. If you canot make my office hours, e-mail me for an appointment, or e-mail/ call me about your ideas.  

DEADLINES:
You will be working on the research project all semester.  The research project is broken up into stages:
9/10 (Week 3): Student-led workshop to outline the steps of doing the research, a checklist, and timeline
9/17: (Week 4):  Proposed research topic (1 para) and list of sources due
10/8, 10/22, 10/29 (Weeks 7, 9, 10): Student Presentations
11/5 (Week 11):  Bring draft of thesis statement to class
11/12 (Week 12):  Thesis Statement and List of References Due (10 points)
12/3: (Week 15):  Research Paper Due (30 points)

Suggested Research Topics:

• Family-based project: Trace the work history of three generations of women in your family (Interview-based project)
• Women workers and tourism in Hawai’i (Library-based; could include interviews)
• Women in plantations and canneries in Hawaii before WWII (Library-based; could include interviews)
• Women in the military; gendering of work in the military (focus on Hawai’i encouraged; Library-based; could include interviews)
• Women and girls working in the sex industry (Library- based)
• Women in politics (Library-based)
• Policies (eg. sexual harassment or family leave or pay equity) regarding women in the U.S. workplace (Library-based)
• Women in small businesses  (Library-based; could include interviews) 
• Women in sports or entertainment (Library-based)
• Service learning-based project. Site: Local 5, Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees union in Hawai’i.
