WS/ES 390/Das Gupta/ Spring 2008

Guidelines for Weekly Assignments (20% of total grade;  Each assignment is worth 2pts. Check the syllabus for the weeks on which the assignment is due):

Length: 1-1.5 pages. I won’t read beyond 2 pages.
Format:

All written work must be spellchecked and free of grammatical errors.

There are no make-ups.  The assignment is due in class on Mondays.  As a rule, papers dropped off by firiends or sent by e-mail are not accepted.

How to do the assignment:

The purpose of these assignments is to reflect critically on the readings.  I will not accept summaries of the readings.  It is also not enough to record your feelings about the readings (eg.  "It made me sad/angry to read this";  "I felt so proud to learn that women are fighting back.").  You need to explain why you felt a certain way. Note the connections you are making: a) with the concepts we use in this class and b) among themes in the readings.  You will end the assignment with an overall  “why/how/what” question on the readings. This question will be the basis for discussions we will have in class.  Thus the question you'll pose will be a discussion question not a factual one.
