Region

(Some words used in this web page are in the Hawaiian langauge)

This theme asks the question "How is this place unified as a region?" Three basic type of regions are:

1. Formal regions - defined by government, or by physical attributes

2. Functional regions - defined by a particular function of the area

3. Vernacular regions - defined by people's perception

Here are examples of some regions in Kane'ohe.

Government

Politically, Kane'ohe is part of the county of Honolulu. We have a Fire Department, Police Department, and Courthouse in our city. Our courthouse is fairly new.

Education

Kane'ohe has pre-schools,charter, public, parochial and post-high schools. There are quite a few pre-schools in Kane'ohe. Most of them are affiliated with and located in churches. Hakipu'u is a secondary charter school located on the grounds of Windward Community College. There are 8 public elementary schools in Kane'ohe:

Ahuimanu Elementary

He'eia Elementary

Kahalu'u Elementary

Kane'ohe Elementary

Kapunahala Elementary

Pu'ohala Elementary

Reverend Benjamin Parker Elementary

Waiahole Elementary

Governor Samuel Wilder King Intermediate School and James B. Castle High School are the only public secondary schools in my city. Ko'olau Baptist,St. Ann's, St. Marks and Windward Nazarene Academy are the parochial Schools in Kane'ohe. Windward Community College has a lush landscape, and is nestled against the Ko'olaus. Hawai'i Pacific University has one of its campuses on the Windward side, and has mostly liberal arts classes and nursing classes located at their Windward facility.

Recreation

The families in Kane'ohe participate in many different types of recreational activities. Baseball, football, and soccer are among the top field sports. Most weekends you can see parents and friends on bleachers, lawn chairs and mats as spectators at different sports events. Because Kane'ohe is so near to the water, windward folks participate in many different water activities like boating, canoe paddling, fishing, jet skiing, kayaking, snorkeling, surfing and swimming. The Kane'ohe District Park offers indoor basketball courts, a swimming pool, baseball fields, skateboard park, outdoor basketball and tennis courts, soccer fields and football fields for the Kane'ohe community to access.
