Human Environment-Interaction

(Some words used in this web page are in the Hawaiian langauge)

This theme asks the question "How do humans and the environment affect each other?" There are 3 key concepts to human-environment-interaction:

1. Humans adapt the environment

2. Humans modify the environment

3. Humans depend on the environment.

See pictures of the various ways that man has adapted and modified the environment in Kane'ohe.

Tunnels

Man has bored holes through the Ko'olau Mountains to make access to the Windward side easy for those on the Honolulu and Leeward side of the island of O'ahu. The 3 tunnels that were built to give easy access are The Wilson Tunnels, The Pali Tunnels and the Tetsuo Harano (Trans-Ko'olau) Tunnels.. This is a picture of the John H. Wilson Tunnel, one of the three tunnels that goes through the Ko'olau Mountains.

Highways

There are a few highways that go through the city of Kane'ohe. The Likelike Highway, Kahekili Highway , Pali Highway, Kamehameha Highway, and the H-3 Freeway all run through Kane'ohe. There are some beautiful scenic views on some of these highways. At right is a picture of the Likelike Highway, the highway that goes through the Wilson Tunnels. The Likelike Highway gave Honolulu its second trans-Koolau link to Windward Oahu. Completed in 1960, it contained the state's longest vehicular tunnel at 2,500 feet in length.
