Method of Instructions

This is a hybrid course taught inside the classroom as well as via the Internet. There is only one class meeting once a week with additional materials posted on instructor's web site, Laulima, and WileyPlus. Majority of the homework assignments will be given in WileyPlus:

  • Materials posted in Laulima are: quizzes, fill in profile and profile2, other homework such as project, etc., PowerPoint, Excel, examples and notes produced by instructors <Modules>, and others in <Resources>.
  • Materials posted on instructor's website, www.calvintan.com, are:: instructor's contact information, instructor's office hours, course syllabus, textbook information, course schedule, items descriptions, grading criteria and self-tracking worksheet - Homepage, Course Information, ACC 201 (Hybrid).

Suggested Study Method:

  • On a typical week, without exam:
    • pre-ch hw in WileyPlus is due on Monday night.
    • chapter hw in WileyPlus is due on Friday night.
      • On Sunday, Monday, read the chapter and additional materials (in Laulima, posted by your instructor or in WileyPlus, posted by your publisher, whichever you've found more useful to you) and complete 40% or more of the pre-chapter HW for that chapter in WileyPlus, by Monday night to earn 5 points. You should have three trys for each question.
      • On Tuesday, Wednesday, begin working on HW assignments for that chapter, you should have five trys for each question. Since these HW questions tend to be longer, most students like to print out each question, work on them manually and then enter the amount into WileyPlus. This is a good practice because WileyPlus has a time-out feature if it was left idle for too long. If you are not sure how to complete certain question(s), print the question, write down your questions.
      • On Thursday, during class meeting at Kopiko building at 5 pm, we can discuss your questions. Of course, if you have the needs to e-mail me the questions earlier in the week, please do so. Once again, in-person or on-line appointment is possible as well.
      • On Friday, you can complete entering answers for your HW in WilleyPLus.
      • Or you can choose to complete the chapter on Saturday, work on the next chapter on Saturday or rest on Saturday.
      • Or you can choose to begin working on the next chapter on Saturday, complete the pre-chapter work and chapter hw assignments early in the week, come to class on Thursday, and then rest on Friday.
      • So, although there is a routine, you can still incorporate our own structure so that you'll a day of break here and another there.

  • On a week with exam.
    • the plan is to have exam only during that week:
      • Part 1 is probably on-line in Laulima, given on Monday and must be completed by Thursday.
      • Part 2 is probably in-class on Thursday, handwritten.
    • exam 3 is an exception, the entire exam maybe on-line because you'll be working on it during Spring break.
    • final exam, I have not decide yet, it may be part on-line, part in-class or all in-class.

  • Project will be on-going during the semester and due on April 25 in the form of PowerPoint.
  • Beginning week 2 of the semester, every other Tuesday at 5 pm is study period. Depending on attendance, this study period may be expanded to every week or reduced to just before exam.
  • Practice quizzes available in Wiley Plus.
  • Instructor will be available to answer questions through e-mail, via phone conversation and on-line or in person appointment.
  • Students should participate in class discussions as well as ask questions.
Student Responsibilities
  • Homework assignments, projects should be submitted on-time.
  • Quizzes, exams should be taken at scheduled time.
  • Since this is an hybrid course, you are responsible for getting onto the world wide web. I may accept the fact that your internet connection is down for a few hours or may be even couple of days as an excuse. But if your internet connection is down for more than 48 hours, please find alternative access such as your friend's place, internet cafe, etc.... I am not sure how much they charge, but popular places are KapCC Business Education Kopiko 101 Lab, Coffee Talk in Kaimuki and Ing Direct in Waikiki. If you have your own laptop, other places are Starbucks Coffee, Safeway Kapahulu, Kahala Mall and Ing Direct in Waikiki. The following websites may be useful:
  • Students must show valid reasons and supporting evidents to arrange for make-ups. If possible, such arrangements should be made prior to due dates. For example,
    • if you were sick, must have doctor's note;
    • if you were in an accident, please show police report;
    • if you have a family member who has unfortunately passed away, my condolences, but please show orbitary or funeral notice; etc.
    • if you have to go on a trip to attend a funeral or to take care of someone who's sick, boarding passes with dates, your name, flight number and seat number should be good evidence.
  • Other than my office hours, you are welcome to make an appointment. I am quite flexible as long as it is not too early in the morning or too late in the night. Please allow at least 36 hours to setup proper appointment. Please check my admin policies.
  • Students are responsible for maintaining a record of their homework and exam scores. The instructor will provide students with official records kept periodically. Students should review and compare with own records and inform instructor of any discrepancies.
  • I will help you with your homework as much as I can but I will not do your homework for you. You may get help from classmates but you should not expect your classmates to do your homework for you. The course schedule is also a worksheet where you can track your scores and computer your course grade.
  • Form study groups with fellow classmates!
  • Practice, practice, practice!
  • Let's have fun and keep our communication channels open at all times!
