Training Sessions
The training and reflection sessions are mandatory for all students. There are two sets of trainings: general (A) and onsite (B) and one midterm reflection session (C):
A. The general orientation, registration, and shift scheduling takes place on Feb. 4. See Training Sessions. If you cannot make any of the scheduled orientations, but would still like to participate in the SHINE service-learning project this semester, to sign up, obtain further instructions, and schedule an orientation, please contact:
• CHINATOWN Site: SHINE Coordinator Candice Sakuda, csakuda@chaminade.edu.
• WAIPAHU Site: The UHM CSS coordinators of service learning and civic engagement csssl@hawaii.edu.
B. The onsite training sessions in Chinatown take place the following week. Attend the training that corresponds to the your shift.
These sessions features immigration and naturalization information, exercises on aging and cultural sensitivity, web tools, and tips for developing yourself as a tutor. For Waipahu, please contact the UHM CSS coordinators at csssl@hawaii.edu.
C. In addition there will be a mandatory mid-semester Reflection Workshop for tutors from both Chinatown and Waipahu. This workshop provides a forum for sharing observations and for discussing and resolving challenges that may have arisen during the first few weeks of tutoring. It also provides professional help with writing reflection papers.
Training dates, times, and locations are listed in our overall training table. Please note the things you should bring along with you.
