Mālama i nā Ahupua‘a
How to Get Started
In order to participate in the Mālama i nā Ahupua‘a program, you must first sign a waiver and registration form, and attend the Orientation & Training. (See schedule)
If you missed the training but would still like to participate in the Mālama i nā Ahupuaʻa program this semester, please follow these steps:
- Email csssl@hawaii.edu to initiate the sign-up procedure.
- Read the article, "Ahupua‘a: A Kanaka Maoli System of Natural Resource Enhancement, Utilization & Preservation," by Marion Kelly (1997). Download the article in PDF file format.
- Watch the film, "Ahupua‘a, Fishponds, and Lo‘i," produced by Nalani Minton and Na Maka o Ka ‘Āina. (1992) You can find the film at Wong's Audiovisual Center at Sinclair Library at UH Mānoa (Call# Videotape 7194) on hold for you during this semester.
- Write a brief summary/reaction paper (1-2 pp.) about the film and article and email it to csssl@hawaii.edu. Steps 2-4 will give you two hours towards fulfilling your service-learning hour requirement.
When Are The Events
You can click on the following link for a calendar with a list of events for this semester:

Once part of the program, you should check this calendar regularly and always on the morning of a scheduled activity for rescheduling, cancellations, or other changes due to weather or other conditions.
The main activities for the Summer Sessions are listed below. The mandatory activities can be substituted with similar activities on other dates (check with the program coordinators). Several other approved activities are listed in the Yahoo Calendar or can be set up (see Where we work).
