I am a PhD candidate and Graduate Assistant studying Japanese Literature at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa. My research interests include contemporary (Heisei) popular literature and Edo period popular literature. I view popular literature, with its densely interconnected web of authors, readers, publishers, editors, advertisers, media companies, intertextual references, etc., as a complex system. I am interested in emergent trends in this complex system; specifically emergent themes of identity and historical construction. I am especially interested in postmodernism, specifically postmodern literature's interaction with history.
