Welcome to the Department of Counselor Education
The Counselor Education Program provides academic, experiential and professional development opportunities to students who plan to work in a school, community service, and/or rehabilitation setting as a Counselor, or as a Counselor Educator. EdCG 613 COUNSELING IN THE SCHOOLS This course discusses the history, philosophy, organization of school counseling programs, counselor role and functions, legal and ethical issues, contemporary issues, current methodology and resources. EdCG 603 INTRODUCTION TO PRACTICUM For students planning to work in school settings, this course provides pre-practicum training and is designed to teach basic counseling skills as well as self-awareness and personal growth as a counseling professional. Particular attention is directed toward assisting students in acquiring the skills necessary to develop positive and productive counseling relationships with clients who manifest a wide range of needs. Roles and functions, organizations, preparation standards and professional orientation are areas discussed in EdCG 703, 733, and 701B when they relate to issues being discussed and are presented at the New Student Orientation which all newly accepted students are required to attend. The Master of Education in Counseling and Guidance is a two-year, professional degree for the development of counselors in four specialties:
The Department is currently not accepting students in the College Counseling program. Accreditation The School and Community Services Counseling specialization's are 60 semester hours, nationally accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs, (CACREP). The Rehabilitation Counseling specialization is 54 semester hours, nationally accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education, (CORE). Candidates for advancement may elect either Plan A (thesis) or Plan B (non-thesis). The DCE Program is committed to integrating theory, research, practice and community service, and encourages interdisciplinary collaboration.
