University of Hawaii at Manoa, College of Education, Special Education
The Master of Education Degree (M.Ed.) program in Special Education (SPED) prepares educators who are specialists in teaching students with disabilities. The M.Ed. in Special Education, a 43 credit program (plus 1 credit of ETEC 501), will be offered State-Wide by the Department of Special Education to those with a Bachelor degree in any field and desiring (a) a teaching license and (b) a certificate or M.Ed. degree in special education. There is a heavy emphasis on field experience to refine practical skills in applied settings.
The M.Ed. program includes courses in the professional core and major emphasis as well as field experience. Field Experiences usually require a minimum of nine (9) hours per week. Students are required to take the SPED 626 Field Experiences in Special Education course at least twice. SPED 627 Advanced Practicum requires a minimum of 20 hours per week during one semester. Students may take SPED 628 Internship in Special Education as a two consecutive semester internship while working for the Hawaii State Department as a special education teacher.
Tuition stipends may be available to participants. Click on the link to find out more information about the Special Education Tuition Stipends.
Student Readiness
This program will incorporate “hybrid” classes that are taught online in addition to condensed weekend formats. Some classes may also use interactive video or web conferencing. The nature of such a program requires a moderate amount of computer literacy and comfort. It also requires self-discipline to maintain the pace of the course between classes. If you are unsure of your comfort in working online or your ability to maintain progress between face-to-face classes, please consult with an advisor prior to applying.
Upon successful completion of this program and upon meeting the Hawaii Department of Education PRAXIS requirements, students can apply for licensure in special education. Participants receive a Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Special Education from the University of Hawai‘i.
