Statewide Introduction
Statewide: Post Baccalaureate Program
The Post Baccalaureate in Special Education (PB-SPED), a 33 credit program (plus 1 credit of ETEC 501), is offered State-Wide by the Department of Special Education to those with a Bachelor degree in any field and desiring a teaching license in special education. There is a heavy emphasis on field experience to refine practical skills in applied settings. Field experience courses include a minimum nine-hour-a-week field placement requirement.
- Students may be employed as a teacher in a special education setting while in the program
- The majority of the coursework is completed in one year, followed by a year-long internship or one semester of traditional student teaching
- Full tuition stipends are available to qualified applicants in exchange for a commitment to teach special education in Hawai‘I (DOE) for three years upon completion of the program. Click on the link to find out more information about the Special Education Tuition Stipends.
Student Readiness
This program will incorporate “hybrid” classes that are taught online in addition to condensed weekend formats. Some classes may also use interactive video or web conferencing. The nature of such a program requires a moderate amount of computer literacy and comfort. It also requires self-discipline to maintain the pace of the course between classes. If you are unsure of your comfort in working online or your ability to maintain progress between face-to-face classes, please consult with an advisor prior to applying.
Upon successful completion of this program and upon meeting the Hawaii Department of Education PRAXIS requirements, students can apply for licensure in special education. Participants receive a Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Special Education from the University of Hawai‘i.
