Requirements for MA in SLS Degree with LSI Specialization
(A) Common Core course requirements for MA in SLS (12 credits)
      Students must take the following four courses:


SLS 441 Language Concepts for Second Language Learning & Teaching
SLS 600 Introduction to Second Language Studies
SLS 650 Second Language Acquisition
SLS 660 Sociolinguistics and Second Languages
(B) Course requirements for LSI Specialization Students must take five courses from the following list, including at least one seminar.
(12 credits +3 credits for seminar):

  • SLS 380 Bilingual Education
  • SLS 430 Pidgin and Creole English in Hawai’i
  • SLS 675 Qualitative Interpretive Research Methods
  • SLS 672 Second Language Classroom Research
  • SLS 678 Microanalysis in Second Language Research
  • SLS 680U or other 680 alpha course if appropriate
  • SLS 760 or other seminar course if appropriate
  • ANTH 605 Discursive Practices
  • ANTH 750 Microanalysis
  • JPN 606 Japanese Sociolinguistics

(C) Elective courses and scholarly work requirements (12 credits)
Plan A students (MA thesis option) must complete:
   Two elective courses (total of 6 credits)
   Six (6) credits of SLS 700, Second Language Thesis Research
   Successful defense of MA thesis with an LSI emphasis

Plan B students (scholarly paper option) must complete:
   Four elective courses (total of 12 credits)
   Successful submission of a scholarly paper with an LSI emphasis
