Definitions of Terms

There are a number of terms used in the Wun Hop Kuen Do style that those outside of the martial arts may not be familiar with. Our terms mostly originate from Chinese. Since the Chinese language uses characters, not letters, the spelling and pronunciation may vary somewhat, depending on the dialect and phonetic representation used. The following is a list of terms and their definitions as I have used them throughout my pages.

Sijo - Literally means your Great Grandfather or Great Grand-Teacher. In our style we mean our Instructor's Instructor's Instructor or more commonly this is used to refer to the founder of a system of martial arts. i.e. Professor Emperado is a Sijo of Kajukenbo.

Si-gung - Literally means your Grandfather or Grand-Teacher. In our style we mean our Instructor's Instructor. i.e. My Si-gung would be Sifu Al Dacascos.

Sifu - Literally means your Father or Teacher. In our style we mean our Chief Instructor. i.e. My Sifu would be Sifu Bill Owens.

Si-hing - Literally means your older brother. In our style we mean the Assistant Instructor.

Simo - Literally means your Mother. In our style we usually mean our Instructor's wife if she is involved in the martial arts or Chief Female Instructor.
