Hints and Guidelines for Assignment 8

  • You’ll be using the “continuing resources” workform to create this bibliographic record.  You’ll find links to coding guidelines for each of the fixed field bytes on CR workform here: http://www.oclc.org/bibformats/en/fixedfield/default.shtm
  • You will need to include an electronic resources 007 in your record, since the resource you are cataloging has electronic resource aspects that cannot be coded in the serials fixed field (008).  Instructions for the 007 are at http://www.oclc.org/bibformats/en/0xx/007comp.shtm
  • This is *not* an electronic reproduction of a print resource.  It is issued electronically.    That means LCRI 1.11A does not apply here.
  • Chapter 12 is the chapter that contains the rules for continuing resources.  A serial (which means a successively issued resource, such as the one you are cataloging for this assignment) is one category of continuing resource.  You will also need to consult chapter 9 for rules on the electronic aspects of this resource.
  • Your record may contain the following serials-specific data fields (if applicable) in addition to the electronic resources 007 and the standard fields that apply to all classes of materials:
  • Continuing resources cataloging in the United States is governed not only by the rules in AACR2 and the Library of Congress Rule Interpretations, but also by CONSER policy.  CONSER is a group of serials catalogers who take responsibility for maintaining and updating bibliographic records for continuing resources stored in the international bibliographic databases like OCLC’s WorldCat.  CONSER policy is published in the CONSER cataloging manual and the CONSER editing guide.   These two manuals document special CONSER policy that occasionally (not often) overrides the AACR/LCRI rules for continuing resources, but they also contain numerous examples and illustrations of how the rules should be applied to various cases.   The module of the CONSER documentation that will help you most with this assignment is Module 31, which is available at http://www.loc.gov/acq/conser/Module31.pdf   Please refer to it—you’ll find it very helpful.
