H 2110 Study and Teaching

BACKGROUND: The subdivision –Study and teaching is used under certain types of headings for works on study and teaching, including methods, institutions, facilities, programs, courses, funding, etc. This instruction sheet provides guidelines for assigning the subdivision –Study and teaching. For classification of works on the teaching of particular subjects, see F 730.

1. General. Assign the free-floating subdivision –Study and teaching (May Subd Geog) under names of individual persons, corporate bodies, and places, and under classes of persons, ethnic groups, and topical headings for works on study and teaching about these subjects.

Do not use this subdivision under music headings, or under names of individual Christian denominations.

For some broad disciplines, phrase headings have been established to cover all aspects of study and teaching pertaining to these subjects, for example, Agricultural education; Technical education. In these fields headings of the type [topic]Study and teaching are restricted in meaning to methods of study and teaching.

2. Level of study. Assign the free-floating subdivision –Study and teaching, qualified by level of study, to works on the study and teaching of a topic limited to a particular educational level, for example, HistoryStudy and teaching (Elementary)France; ScienceStudy and teaching (Higher)Great Britain.

The following free-floating subdivisions may be used, if appropriate:

–Study and teaching (Continuing education)
–Study and teaching (Early childhood)
–Study and teaching (Elementary)
–Study and teaching (Graduate)
–Study and teaching (Higher)
–Study and teaching (Internship)
–Study and teaching (Middle school)
–Study and teaching (Preschool)
–Study and teaching (Primary)
–Study and teaching (Residency)
–Study and teaching (Secondary)

3. Supervision. Assign the free-floating subdivision –Study and teachingSupervision (May Subd Geog) under topical headings to works on the supervision of study and teaching in these fields. Example:

Title:   The Art of clinical supervision : a pastoral counseling perspective.

650 #0 $a Pastoral counseling $x Study and teaching $x Supervision.

4. Study and teaching vs. Training of. To works that discuss the study and teaching of a topic as part of training for an occupation or profession, assign headings of the type [topic]Study and teaching or [...] education and [class of persons]Training of, if appropriate. For instructions on assigning the subdivision –Training of, see H 2217.

5. Places. Assign the free-floating subdivision –Study and teaching (May Subd Geog) under names of places for general works on study and teaching about these places.

Phrase headings of the type [...] studies for area studies, for example, African studies, were discontinued in 1977 and should be changed when encountered on bibliographic records.

For works on study and teaching about a place published in that place, omit the geographical subdivision under –Study and teaching. Example:

Title:   Understanding the United States : a guide for American teachers.

651 #0 $a United States $x Study and teaching (Secondary)

For works on study and teaching about a country for use in a locality of the same country or for use in another country, subdivide –Study and teaching by the place in which the study and teaching is to be carried out. Examples:

Title:   Helping Chinese students to understand the United States.

651 #0 $a United States $x Study and teaching (Secondary) $z China.

Title:   Studying the United States : a guide for social studies teachers in Boston.

651 #0 $a United States $x Study and teaching (Secondary) $z Massachusetts $z Boston.

For works on a special aspect of study and teaching about a place, interpose a topical subdivision between the place and the subdivision –Study and teaching, for example, SwedenSocial life and customsStudy and teaching.

Do not interpose place between a topical heading and the subdivision –Study and teaching.

6. Languages. Assign the free-floating subdivision –Study and teaching (May Subd Geog) under individual languages and groups of languages to general works on the study and teaching of these languages.

Add a parenthetical qualifier to indicate level of study, if appropriate, for example, English languageStudy and teaching (Continuing education).

In accordance with H 1154, subdivide headings of the type [language or language group]Study and teaching by special topics, if appropriate, to bring out particular aspects of the study and teaching of these languages, for example, Spanish languageStudy and teachingForeign speakers.

7. Sacred works. Assign the free-floating subdivision –Study and teaching (May Subd Geog) under uniform titles for sacred works to works on how to study and teach these sacred works, including their individual parts, for example, Book of MormonStudy and teaching.

Note: Prior to 1991, the subdivision –Study was used under individual sacred works. That subdivision is now obsolete.

8. Music. The free-floating subdivision –Instruction and study (May Subd Geog) is used instead of –Study and teaching in the field of music. For guidelines on assigning this subdivision, see H 1160 and H 1161.
