H 1210.5 Aerial and Space Photography

 

BACKGROUND: The heading Aerial photography is assigned to technical works on methods of taking photographs from conventional aircraft. Headings of the type Aerial photography in [topic] are assigned to works that discuss methods of taking aerial photographs and using them to carry out work or research in a particular field. The heading Aerial photographs is assigned to general works on the handling, maintenance, cataloging, etc., of collections of aerial photographs. The subdivision Aerial photographs is used under topical headings and under names of countries, cities, etc., for discussions or collections of aerial photographs, or reproductions of them, of a subject or place. The subdivision Aerial views is used for maps depicting areas observed from the air. The subdivision Photographs from space is used under topical headings and under names of countries, cities, etc., for collections of photographs, or reproductions of them, taken from outer space. This instruction sheet provides guidelines for assigning these headings and subdivisions.

 

1. Aerial photography.

a. General. Assign the heading Aerial photography to technical works on methods of taking photographs from conventional aircraft.

 

b. By subject. Assign headings of the type Aerial photography in [topic] to works that discuss methods of taking aerial photographs and using them as a tool in carrying out work or research in a particular field. Example:

Title:   Color aerial photography in the plant sciences and related fields.

650 #0 $a Aerial photography in agriculture.

650 #0 $a Aerial photography in forestry.

650 #0 $a Aerial photography in botany.

650 #0 $a Color photography.

 

2. Aerial photographs.

a. General. Assign the heading Aerial photographs to general works on the handling, maintenance, cataloging, etc., of collections of aerial photographs.

 

b. By subject. Assign the free-floating subdivision Aerial photographs under topical headings to collections or discussions of aerial photographs on these topics. Example:

650 #0 $a Land use $z Mexico $x Aerial photographs.

 

c. By place. Assign the free-floating subdivision Aerial photographs under names of countries, cities, etc., to discussions or collections of aerial photographs, including reproductions, of these places. Example:

Title:   Great Britain from the air.

651 #0 $a Great Britain $x Aerial photographs.

 

3. Aerial views. Assign the free-floating form subdivision Aerial views under names of countries, cities, etc., or under individual educational institutions, to maps or atlases depicting those places observed from the air. Do not further subdivide by Maps.


4. Photographs from space. Assign the free-floating form subdivision Photographs from space under topical headings and under names of countries, cities, etc., for collections of photographs, or reproductions of them, taken from outer space. Use the heading Space photography for technical works on the methods of taking photographs from outer space.
