When: Saturday, October 17th (9:00 a.m. to 12 noon)*

What: clearing invasive plants in Ka'a'awa Valley

Who: Learning Community students, their family members & friends, plus we may be joined by some KCC faculty/staff and Phi Theta Kappans

Task: Write as if you are Hiram, Saul or Eahou reflecting on your visit to Ka'a'awa courtesy of Kualoa Ranch in 2009. What would your character find most interesting, surprising, disturbing, and/or hopeful about Ka'a'awa today?

Format: One page approximately 250-500 words (typed; handwritten reflections will be accepted if legible). Please provide word count at the end.

Preferred Deadline : Friday, October 23, 2009

Final Deadline: Friday, November 6, 2009

*If you can't join us on Saturday, October 17th, which is a FREE event that allows us to provide service while experiencing Ka'a'awa, then you may visit Kualoa Ranch at your own expense. Go to their website to learn more about their various tours and activities, includes horseback riding, ATV tours, and movie site bus tours. Be sure to ask for their kama'aina rates.

*Alternate assignments if you absolutely can't visit Kualoa Ranch:

• Option One: Visit the Pali Lookout. When driving there you should take Nu'uanu Pali Drive (turn right at Waokanaka St.). Instead of focusing on Ka’a’awa, you would focus on Hiram's trip through Nu’uanu.
• Option Two: Write about Honolulu in 2009 from Hiram or Saul’s perspective.
