History 152: World Civilizations II

Think/Write Questions (Unit Four)

How do you think the experience of the Great War changed the people and countries involved?

What do you think of Gandhi’s non-violent methods? “Wherein is courage required -- in blowing others to pieces from behind a cannon, or with a smiling face to approach a cannon and be blown to pieces?”

After reading about the Holocaust <http://www.fordham.edu/HALSALL/MOD/1946hoess.html> and the Rape of Nanking (handout), do you think society can train individuals to perform evil deeds? Conversely, are heroes made from collective action or individual behavior?

Do you think the attack at Pearl Harbor and the dropping of atomic bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki had similar motivations?

Do you think the accounts of Hiroshima survivors (Spodek pg. 713 & Doc. 25.4) have made the U.S., or any other nation, less likely to use a nuclear weapon in the future?

Considering the information you’ve learned and the skills you’ve developed in this course, what do you think were the important lessons for you?
