Welcome to the first issue of HELP Nowadays newspaper. This edition of HELP Nowadays was created by ESL students enrolled in my Writing 30 course at the Hawai'i English Language Program (HELP), a division of the Department of ESL, University of Hawai'i at Manoa.

Each section of the newspaper was edited by a team of volunteer HELP students who screened the pool of articles submitted by their peers. Selected articles were then reviewed and sent to the original author for improvements in cohesiveness, clarity, complexity, and accuracy. The result is an online newspaper worthy of distribution to a world-wide audience.

This issue was made possible by 14 lower-intermediate ESL students who spent the last five weeks of the term both authoring and editing each other's articles. Because of the last-minute nature of this project, they were limited in the amount of research devoted to each article. Nevertheless, I think you'll agree their efforts resulted in a fascinating piece of work.

In the future, I hope to open the publication to submissions from all HELP students interested in getting published on the web. A similar web site dedicated to ESL students is the Exchange, where you will find quite a number of my students' writings as well.

I hope you find this inaugural issue of HELP Nowadays an informative and entertaining experience.
