Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment

For those who do not know, I had a standard eye check-up last March and the Doctors found something that was not supposed to be there. To be exact, they found that I have a condition called Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment.

So this summer I received an eye operation that looked like this. The operation is called "Scleral Buckling." The procedure generally follows these steps:

1) An incision is done on the eyewall that has sub-retinal fluid. The fluid then spontaneously leaks out reducing the space between the detached retina and affected inner eyewall.

2) A freezing probe is then placed behind the eye and is applied to the affected area. This changes the consistency of the area into a sticky media allowing the retina and eyewall to be fused back together.

3) A silicone belt is placed around the circumference of the eye nestled underneath the six rectal muscles of the eye. The belt pushes the eyewall towards the detached retina.
