The Honolulu Academy of Arts was incorporated in 1922 and first opened its doors to the general public in 1927. Anna Rice Cooke, Hawaii-born and the daughter of New England missionaries, provided the original vision and guided the institution throughout its formative years.

Mrs. Cooke was instrumental for initially acquiring and gifting a core group of artworks which reinforced the museum's goals and shaped its character as the institution of the Pacific where "east meets west." Now celebrating its 71st anniversary, the Academy continues to achieve its mission through exhibitions, education programs, collections, publications, studio art classes and theater activities, all of which are designed to serve, engage and enrich the individual and the community.
Developed from founder Anna Rice Cooke's
initial gift of approximately 4,500 works of art, the Academy's
collection now totals over 34,000 pieces and is internationally
recognized for its quality and diversity. The Academy is Hawaii's
only general art museum, and its holdings, almost equally divided
between Western and Asian art, are encyclopedic in nature and
scope. The Honolulu Academy of Arts is a museum of world art
serving Hawaii and its people. The museum is located in downtown
Honolulu across from Thomas Square. An active program of special
exhibitions is scheduled throughout the year.

The 300-seat Academy Theatre is located behind the Academy on Kinau St. It presents more than 400 exciting theatre programs each year. Programs include foreign films, concerts, art lectures, and experimental performances. Also, the Theatre has local and national figures performing and lecturing on certain topics throughout the year. Occasionally, the Theatre also features some special themed film series.
