Research Interests:
My research interests focuses on the ecology, population genetics and conservation
of the Laysan Albatross. Albatross are large, pelagic birds that spend the
vast majority of their live at sea and come to land only to breed. My dissertation
focuses on three areas:
1. Examining how physical and biological oceanographic factors determine their
distribution and oceanic habitat use.
2. Determining the population structure and amount of gene flow between each
insular breeding population.
3. Examining the spatial and temporal overlap of Laysan Albatross distribution
with North Pacific Longline fisheries and determining whether bycatch mortality
in the fishery is population biased.

Research Interests:
My objectives are to evaluate the genetic and dietary patterns observed in
the global populations of the White Tern by:
1. Comparing genetic differences among the three subspecies of the genus Gygis
2. Comparing genetic differences among geographically distant populations
within the subspecies Gygis alba candida, specifically between Northwest
Hawaiian Island (NWHI) and Oahu populations
3. Determining trophic levels of Gygis throughout the Pacific
4. Comparing stable isotope variation among tissues types (liver, muscle,
feather), and within and among feather types to assess dietary variation within
individuals over different temporal scales
5. Using museum specimens to detect temporal changes in genetic variation
and trophic level of Gygis
