Turkeys are being stuffed, lights are going up, elevators are singing carols, projects are becoming due, finals are approaching fast, stress is getting higher.... oops, maybe I better stop while I'm ahead and get to what this newsletter is all about. By the way, I'm still waiting for some of your questionnaires to come in. Please fill out what you can and send it back to me. Even if it's simply checking the box that says "I don't want to answer this questionnaire," I'll be satisfied. ----------------- | ANNOUNCEMENTS | ----------------- Everyone's favorite part. YES, VIRGINIA, THERE IS A MEETING --------------------------------- First off, to answer any doubts, there WILL be a Chi Alpha meeting this Friday (11/29) STSP (same time, same place). So come, if you're here. FIRST CONTACT THIS SATURDAY --------------------------- This Saturday (11/30) Chi Alpha will be going where many others have gone before -- to the new Star Trek movie. Meet at Chi Alpha corner at 3:30 pm and from there the gang will head on over to the Waikiki Twins. They'll be going to dinner afterwards. Unfortunately, the theater does not take those cheap GMT tickets that are sold at Campus Center, so the cost for the movie will be $6.50. Be there or be a Borg (resistence is futile). BYE-BYE BANQUET BRIEF --------------------- We're still looking for a place to have our bye-bye banquet on December 13. If you know of a semi-formal restaurant that serves cheap dishes for large parties, send your ideas to Amy. The movie was good, but that's not what this is about. It was the standing in line that was interesting. Not the standing, but the conversation. I like listening to snipets of conversation around me, and at this time I was listening to these two people talking about spirituality. I guess one of them was teaching some sort of yoga class. I didn't hear everything, but I did catch one intriguing statement. One of them said "That's great, the ideal spiritual teacher." I thought about what would make someone the "ideal spiritual teacher", or even if there was such a thing. I came to the conclusion that is was a very relative term. In non-Christian American society, I imagine such a person would probably be some guru or something that tells people just what they want to hear: that as long as they are "good" they can map their own destinies, that they are always right and nobody can tell them that they are following a crooked path. Brings to mind Proverbs 16:25 -- "There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death." For Christians the obvious "ideal spiritual teacher" is Christ. I mean, how much more ideal can you get than God himself? But unlike the ideals of the nineties, Jesus did not say what people wanted to hear. Rather, he said exactly what people did not want to hear: that we are a wicked and perverse generation who needs God desperately. No matter what we do, we will never be completely right. The only way we can get off the crooked path is by coming to Him and allow Him to plan our "destiny." Sometimes we will come up against stiff resistance when we share God with others. The last thing people want to hear is that they are wrong, but the Bible says that is the first thing we must hear before we can enter into a relationship with God. We must let go of our pride and let Jesus guide. We can trust Him, for He is the "ideal spriritual teacher". _______________________________________________________________________________ Though we thank God everyday, this Thursday is a special time for giving thanks to our great Provider. Have a good long weekend. ("Ahead, warp factor 1." "Aye, aye, sir.")
