Acts 16:31 ******************************************************************************* You might call this the early edition. Not because a later one will follow, but because this week's issue is early. Due to the timing of announcements, I had to send this out a couple of days before I usually do. I apologize to any who were planning on sending out articles at the last minute, although I don't suspect that category covers many people. While we're on the subject, let me say something about your articles (like I do in every newsletter). I must say I was much more pleased this time around. I actually got a good number of submissions to make this a meaty message. Please keep up this pace. If at all possible I would like to see your contributions without having to scold you and grovel before you begging for material. You have two weeks. The clock is ticking..... ----------------- | ANNOUNCEMENTS | ----------------- LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, MAN THE POLLS! ------------------------------------ Those of you who signed up to help with our fundraiser, running the booths at the ASUH Special Elections, this is an IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT. There will be an orientation on Tuesday Night, October 1st, at 6:30pm in Campus Center room 220 (next to the bathrooms on the second floor). You should make every effort to attend so that you know what to do. They want at least three representatives from our group to show up. A couple of you have already said that you are going, but we need one more. Once again, the Special Election times are Monday-Wednesday, October 7-9 from 10:00-2:00. If you were unable to attend last Friday's meeting but are willing to help out, either contact Joel at 957-1493 or show up at the orientation. POLITICAL ENDORSEMENT --------------------- On a related note, those of you who are eligible to vote (that is, you are a full-time UH-Manoa undergraduate) should do so. A former Chi Alpha member, Craig Matsuura, is running for Treasurer. Come and support him with your vote. Oh, just so you know, those of you who will be running the election booths may NOT, under any circumstances, mention his name to other students who come to the booth to vote. However, you may still cast your own ballot in favor of him. READY, AIM, STAPLE! ------------------- Our monthly flier postings will commence next Monday, October 7. Meet at Chi Alpha corner (between Wainani I & F) at 6:30 pm, bring any desk staplers or staple guns you have (along with the ammunition of course), and get ready to plaster the campus to let people know we're out there. BEACH BBQ --------- Tentatively scheduled for Saturday, October 19 is a beach barbeque at Ala Moana Beach Park. We're planning on starting it at 3:00 pm and continuing until sunset. IT'S FROLIC TIME ---------------- For the older crowd, the next Frolic Like a Heifer gig will be on Sunday October 13 at Anna Banana's (across from the baseball field on Beretania Ave) at 8:00 pm. Stop by if you want to hear some great music, however you must be 21 and older to attend. (sorry young'uns). NEW MEN'S SMALL GROUP SECTION STARTING SOON ------------------------------------------- Starting on October 7, there will be another men's small group section running on Mondays. It will be held in Hemenway 215 staring at 4:30 pm SHARP. The room scheduling for the next few weeks is kind of scattered between Hemenway 215, 216, and 217. Those who plan to come out to the men's small group on either Monday or Wednesday would do best to check all three rooms to see where the "XA" sign is. Whatever door I post the sign on is where the meeting is being held. RITCHARD, WHEREFORE ART THOU? ----------------------------- In case any of you have been wondering why I haven't been attending the Chi Alpha Friday meetings, let me assure you that I'm not falling away from the faith and spending my time playing the accordian with the Hare Krishnas. I've been tied up with rehearsals for the dance & drama department's production of Romeo and Juliet. Opening night is just around the corner and I want to give a personal plug (my editorial prerogative). Performances will be held on October 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, and 19 at 8:00 pm and October 6, 13, and 20 at 2:00 pm on the Kennedy Theatre mainstage. Cost is $3.00 for UH-Manoa students with a validated Fall 96 ID. I sure hope you can make it to one of the Thursday, Saturday, or Sunday shows. Don't you dare skip out of a Chi Alpha meeting to watch it. OCTOBER BIRTHDAYS ----------------- Cheryl Kihlstrom 10/23 Jeremy Vierra 10/10 _______________________________________________________________________________ ------------ | FEATURES | ------------ THE THREE LITTLE TREES Once upon a mountain top, three little trees stood and dreamed of what they wanted to become when they grew up. The first little tree looked up at the stars and said: "I want to hold treasure. I want to be covered with gold and filled with precious stones. I'll be the most beautiful treasure chest in the world!" The second little tree looked out at the small stream trickling by on it's way to the ocean. "I want to be traveling mighty waters and carrying powerful kings. I'll be the strongest ship in the world!" The third little tree looked down into the valley below where busy men and women worked in a busy town. "I don't want to leave the mountain top at all. I want to grow so tall that when people stop to look at me, they'll raise their eyes to heaven and think of God. I will be the tallest tree in the world." Years passed. The rain came, the sun shone, and the little trees grew tall. One day three woodcutters climbed the mountain. The first woodcutter looked at the first tree and said, "This tree is beautiful. It is perfect for me." With a swoop of his shining axe, the first tree fell. "Now I shall be made into a beautiful chest, I shall hold wonderful treasure!" The first tree said. The second woodcutter looked at the second tree and said, "This tree is strong. It is perfect for me." With a swoop of his shining axe, the second tree fell. "Now I shall sail mighty waters!" thought the second tree. "I shall be a strong ship for mighty kings!" The third tree felt her heart sink when the last woodcutter looked her way. She stood straight and tall and pointed bravely to heaven. But the woodcutter never even looked up. "Any kind of tree will do for me." He muttered. With a swoop of his shining axe, the third tree fell. The first tree rejoiced when the woodcutter brought her to a carpenter's shop. But the carpenter fashioned the tree into a feedbox for animals. The once beautiful tree was not covered with gold, with treasure. She was coated with sawdust and filled with hay for hungry farm animals. The second tree smiled when the woodcutter took her to a shipyard, but no mighty sailing ship was made that day. Instead the once strong tree was hammered and sawed into a simple fishing boat. She was too small and too weak to sail to an ocean, or even a river; instead she was taken to a little lake. The third tree was confused when the woodcutter cut her into strong beams and left her in a lumberyard. "What happened?" The once tall tree wondered. "All I ever wanted was to stay on the mountain top and point to God..." Many many days and nights passed. The three trees nearly forgot their dreams. But one night, golden starlight poured over the first tree as a young woman placed her newborn baby in the feedbox. "I wish I could make a cradle for him." her husband whispered. The mother squeezed his hand and smiled as the starlight shone on the smooth and the sturdy wood. "This manger is beautiful." she said. And suddenly the first tree knew he was holding the greatest treasure in the world. One evening a tired traveler and his friends crowded into the old fishing boat. The traveler fell asleep as the second tree quietly sailed out into the lake. Soon a thundering and thrashing storm arose. The little tree shuddered. She knew she did not have the strength to carry so many passengers safely through with the wind and the rain. The tired man awakened. He stood up, stretched out his hand, and said, "Peace." The storm stopped as quickly as it had begun. And suddenly the second tree knew he was carrying the king of heaven and earth. One Friday morning, the third tree was startled when her beams were yanked from the forgotten woodpile. She flinched as she was carried through an angry jeering crowd. She shuddered when soldiers nailed a man's hands to her. She felt ugly and harsh and cruel. But on Sunday morning, when the sun rose and the earth trembled with joy beneath her, the third tree knew that God's love had changed everything. And every time people thought of the third tree, they would think of God. That was better than being the tallest tree in the world. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A FRIENDSHIP POEM Chris Wong Friends like you come from the Lord, A friend like you, who could afford? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PRAISES AND REQUESTS Someone mentioned to me that I ought to have a praise report and prayer request section in this newsletter. Perhaps I was unclear earlier, but this section always exists, that is when I get praise reports and prayer requests to include (this time around I did). If any of you need prayer or just want to say hallelujah for something that happened, and you don't mind sharing it with everyone, by all means send it in. >From Stacie (Dated 9/23): "I saw Joel and Lisa at Burger King today at lunch time. It's always cool to see Chi Alphers during the day. Joel told me we didn't have booktable this week after I had just figured that out for myself before going to Burger King. " Praise report #2. "The Bows won their first game this past Saturday. Praise the lord!" [Ed. note -- Unfortunately they lost their last game]. Prayer request: "Lisa told me to pray for Lynn. Pray for Lisa and pray for my grandma because she has a lot of things wrong with her and is sick. Just pray a lot because I'm sure everyone wants it." _______________________________________________________________________________ That just about wraps it up. Thank you to those who sent me articles, shame on you for those who didn't. I want to see more in future issues. You have two whole weeks. The clock is ticking....
