God has so much in store for us and perhaps, come next May, we'll be saying "Wasn't that year nice?" WHAT IS THIS THING AND WHY IS THIS FREAK SENDING IT TO ME? ---------------------------------------------------------- First off, since we're starting the year anew, and since there are several new addresses on this list, an introduction is in order. My name is Ritchard, the Chi Alpha computer guy. This is our bi-weekly email newsletter, "The Brotherly," which serves as a reminder of upcoming events and also includes some nice inspirational anecdotes (see next section) which are intended to help us through the storms of everyday life. It is available only on email (at least until I find an efficient way to distribute hardcopies) and is also accessible via the World Wide Web from the address listed at the bottom of this message. You're receiving this newsletter because, in one fashion or another, you wanted to be (or at least you didn't object to being) on the Chi Alpha email list: chi_alpha@hawaii.edu. Perhaps you never really wanted to be on this list, but thought you'd hurt my feelings if you refused. Or maybe you wanted to be on the list at one time, but changed your mind as soon as you looked at this message. In any case, if this describes you, here's your chance to bail out. Send me an email saying that you would like to be removed from the mailing list and I will accommodate you immediately. I promise you, I won't be offended. I like to know that the people who are receiving this newsletter really want to receive it. On the flip side, I also welcome new additions to the mailing list. If you have a friend who goes to Chi Alpha, or wants to go, and I don't have his/her address, let me know please. The email list is also accessible through the web site. It's not a current list as of this writing, but will be, hopefully, by the end of the week. AND SPEAKING OF INSPIRATIONAL ANECDOTES... ------------------------------------------ Another first thing first is those anecdotes I was telling you about earlier. Where are they? Well, this issue doesn't contain anyway. Why? Because nobody sent me anything. This is something which I will be harping on all semester. Anyone who was on this list last year knows what I mean. They got reminders on every single issue of the "Brotherly" to no avail. I will explain for new subscribers since you can help me out. Although announcements are an important part of this newsletter, I don't think it is the MOST important part. If announcements were all this thing was good for, then I'm pretty much wasting my time since I'm only repeating what Amy says every Friday night. That is why I am always pleading for articles. Articles are anything inspirational --- either a verse that hit home this week, a devotional which lifted you up, a wholesome joke that someone forwarded to you, anything like that. I publish just about everything that is submitted, as long as it edifies the body of Christ in some way. If you wish, I can even post it with an anonymous source. Towards the end of the semester, after much begging, articles slowly began to trickle in and I am thankful to those people who sent something. I'm hoping for a much bigger response from the get-go this time around. I'd like to come to a point where I have enough articles to print without having to ask for more. Since the planning meetings moved to Fridays, events are announced right after they are planned, so the importance of articles to make this newsletter interesting has now risen sharply. _______________________________________________________________________________ ----------------- | ANNOUNCEMENTS | ----------------- Now that we got the preliminaries out of the way, let's start things up. MEETING TIMES AND DATES ----------------------- You know this already, but I thought I'd tell you again anyway. General meeting and prayer meeting times have not changed since last year. The general meeting are still in Kuykendall 210 every Friday at 7:00 pm. The prayer meetings are still at the Campus Center 2nd floor stairs (behind the bookstore 2nd level) every weekday morning at 8:00 am. Planning meetings, however, have moved to Kuykendall 210 every other Friday (next one is 9/13) at 5:30 pm. Small groups meeting times will be announced shortly. I can't speak for the women, but for the men it is a toss-up between Mondays at 5:00 pm and Wednesdays at 4:30 pm. I will try to contact all of the guys to find out what time most could come (an email reply would also be helpful). The place will be decided on as soon as we have a definite time. HIKE TO THE HILLS ----------------- Hiking is always a fun tradition at Chi Alpha. The first one of this semester will be on Saturday, September 14. It will be at some sort of ridge to be determined later. Meeting time will be at 9:00 am between the Wainani apartment buildings I and F (which we like to refer to as "Chi Alpha Corner.") ROCK, ROCK, ROCK ---------------- Ain't music great? On September 7, that's this Saturday, there will be a four-band concert at Calvary Chapel Pearl Harbor. Featured bands will be our very own "Frolic like a Heifer", "Theocracy A.D." (formerly known as "Bloodbath"), "Seventy times Seven", and "E9" ("Engine number 9"). Rides will be arranged at this Friday's general meeting. ______________________________________________________________________________ ------------------- | PRAYER REQUESTS | ------------------- This is another neat feature of the "Brotherly". If you have a prayer request you can email it to everyone at anytime with the address chi_alpha@hawaii.edu or you can inform me and I will put it in the immediately following issue of the "Brotherly". I ran into Lisa Gold today. She wants us to pray for her grandfather who just had a serious heart attack. He's 82 and hasn't received Christ yet. The doctors are finding it difficult to treat him because he's already had bypass surgery 9 times. It is obvious that God is giving him many chances to come to know him. Pray for Lisa's grandfather, pray for Lisa's family, and pray especially that Lisa would get the chance to share the love of Christ with her grandfather before it's too late. She also wants us to pray that her financial aid for next year goes through, and also for her upcoming court case. ______________________________________________________________________________ All's well that ends well and that just about does it for the first "Brotherly" issue of the year. I hope to see articles pouring in soon.
