So, were stuck with another annoucement bulletin. Actually, I thought about bypassing an April issue since most of these events are in May. But, it doesn't hurt to have an early start on things, especially as we industrious students carefully plan our lives from now through the end of the semester (yeah, right). I'll just repeat them a couple of weeks from now. Besides, there's a greater sense of completeness if I send out five issues this semester as opposed to only four. It turns out this newsletter has a musical ring to it. No, that is not one of my dumb puns; you'll see what I mean in a moment. ----------------- | ANNOUNCEMENTS | ----------------- DA KINE JESUS ------------- On Thursday, April 17, at 7:30 pm, the popular Hawaiian band Kapena will be performing in the Campus Center Ballroom. It is a *free* concert in which the members of the band will also be sharing their personal experiences with God. This is an evangelical outreach sponsered by our brothers and sisters at Victory Campus Fellowship. DA KINE FROLIC -------------- On Thursday, May 1, the popular Unknown band Frolic Like a Heifer will be performing at New Hope College Fellowship in Crawford Hall 102/103. It is also free but, God willing, they will be selling their very-soon-to-be- realeased CD at the concert. Come out and get ready to have some fun. WARNING: The surgeon at Queen's Medical Center has determined that frolicking can be hazardous to your health! (That's an inside joke.) BYE-BYE BANQUET LOOKING FOR A PLACE ----------------------------------- It's that time of year again. Our semi-annual bye-bye banquet, the night where we put a cap on the semester and say sayonara to all the seniors, is happening May 9th instead of the regular Chi Alpha meeting. We still need a host restaurant. Because some of us are tired of Italian food, we're going to have an Asian theme this time: Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Indian, whatever has the right price. If you know of a good place, let Amy know. It must have this contradictory criteria: semi-formal, cheap ($10-$15 per person), big (enough to seat about 15 people at a table), and friendly. DISCO IS DEAD....OR SO WE THOUGHT --------------------------------- Before I go on I just want to say that this was NOT my idea. Joel and Tim will be hosting a disco party at their place after Chi Alpha on May 2nd. Yes, you read right, disco. You know, John Travolta, Saturday Night Fever, bell-bottoms, platform shoes, bushy hair, 70s stuff. BOOKTABLE IS DEAD...AT LEAST FOR NOW ------------------------------------ Just so you know, our last booktable of Spring '97 will be on April 21st. SUMMER HAPPENINGS ----------------- A little early, but a good space filler. The general Chi Alpha meetings will still be held at 7:00 pm, however they will be relocated to the Hope Chapel Honolulu church office at University Square #212. Small groups will be suspended during the summer. _______________________________________________________________________________ ------------ | FEATURES | ------------ APRIL DEVO "So Jesus answered and said to them, 'Have FAITH in God. For assuredly, I say to you, WHOEVER says to this mountain, be removed and be cast into the sea, and does NOT doubt in his heart, but BELIEVES that those things he says will be done, HE WILL HAVE WHATEVER HE SAYS. Therefore I say to you, whatever thing you ask when you pray, BELIEVE that you RECEIVE them, and you WILL HAVE THEM." "NOW FAITH is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good testimony. By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible." Faith is NOT a trick performed with our lips, but a spoken expression that springs from the conviction of our hearts. The idea that faith's confession is a formula for getting things from God is unbiblical. But the fact that the faith in our hearts is to be spoken, and thereby becomes active and effective towards specific results, is taught here by the Lord Jesus. We need to believe without doubting in our hearts. Speaking to the mountain (our problem) is not a vain or superstitious exercise or indulgence in humanistic mind-science, but instead becomes an applied release of God's creative word of promise. Have a wonderful day and speak to your mountain. _______________________________________________________________________________ Only one more of these to go before we close the book on this semester. Look forward to the final issue of the Brotherly, including Ritchard's farewell speech, coming to an INBOX near you.
