The focus of this laboratory is on detailed behavioral analysis, particularly of emotional systems such as defense and aggression. We have analyzed several major components of mammalian defensive behavior, including flight, freezing, defensive threat/attack, and risk assessment, each of which represents a response to particular configurations of threat stimuli and characteristics of the situations in which these are encountered. Collaborative work with D.C. Blanchard has indicated that these several defensive behaviors respond differentially to psychoactive drugs, suggesting that particular defenses may contribute specifically to anxiety disorders such as GAD and panic.
