"It's the crossword game you've played all your life, but never quite like this...SCRABBLE!"
From July 2, 1984 until its ultimate finale on June 11, 1993, Scrabble was one of the most popular game shows of its time. It aired on NBC during a time where game shows were prevalent - and very enticing. Michael Larson had just taken a hit game show, Press Your Luck, for $110,237.
But this game show was totally different. Scrabble was based on the crossword game everyone at the time knew something about. However...it was not played with the traditional rules, hence, the opening spiel.
Chuck Woolery was the host of this show. Oddly enough, he got more fame from hosting this show, his THIRD hosting stint, than he did from his first, Wheel of Fortune (WOF), or his second, Love Connection. This was so because Chuck left WOF and Merv Griffin on very bad terms, and Chuck's WOF shows have seemingly vanished. Only a select few of those remain. As for Love Connection, it just was not as popular as other shows of the time.
Like all game shows, Scrabble had its share of bloopers and unique moments. If you ever watched the show frequently, who could have ever forgotten Sang's 87-second Scrabble Sprint? Or the "Mosquitos" episode (yes, it was even spelt wrong to begin with, it should have been MOSQUITOES!)? Thankfully, Kris Lane has a page that you can go to to relive all those wacky moments!
