Iolani Palace is the only royal palace used as an authorize residence by a reigning monarch in the United States. Iolani Palace was built in by King David Kalakaua; the last king of Hawaii. The palace was constructed in 1882. When King Kalakaua died, the palace remained as a residential home for Queen Lili’uokalani; King Kalakaua’s sister and successor of the throne. In January 1893, the Hawaiian Monarchy was overthrown and Queen Lili’uokalani was imprisoned in the palace for eight months in 1895. The Palace was a capitol for the Provisional Government, Republic, Territory and State of Hawaii until 1969. During that time the Palace was left and restoration begun. Today Iolani Palace is a museum under the direction of Friends of Iolani Palace, who continue restoration efforts. Iolani Palace symbolizes the efforts of Hawaii’s people to restore Hawaii’s sovereignty and independence.
